I was born and raised in a suburb of Southern California called Diamond Bar (I promise it’s not a strip club). I attended the University of California Santa Barbara for my undergrad, where the right of way was given to the highway of bikes and longboards that cut through the campus. After working for a couple of years as an ophthalmic technician, I decided it was time to check out the beaches of the east coast! Four years later, I received my MD/MPH degree from the University of Miami. Finally, solely to continue my expedition to live next to various bodies of water, I am now an emergency medicine resident here in Corpus Christi.

Just kidding. Christus Health stood out to me in so many ways. I rotated here in August of my 4th year. It was my last audition rotation and from the first day, I began to understand the value of being an unopposed EM residency. For me, the whole point of being an EM physician is to become competent in all fields and to perform necessary emergent and otherwise indicated procedures for optimal and efficient patient care. I didn’t want my residency training to consist of seeing an interesting dislocation, only to call the orthopedic resident to come down and reduce it. Similarly, to see my patient in respiratory distress begin to decompensate, only to wait for anesthesia to come down and intubate the patient. Literally walking into my first shift as a student here, Dr. Kimberly Leeson grabbed me with my backpack still on, into the trauma bay to reduce a fractured tibia/fibula. Here at Christus Health, I felt the residents were given the most autonomy and the seniors become rock stars ready to tackle any type of practice as an attending.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking, fishing, playing basketball, and going to the gym. It helps that Corpus Christi is one of the best fishing destinations in the United States! My girlfriend is a pediatric resident in California, so I try to visit her whenever possible. Another aspect that I appreciate about this program is the flexibility in the vacations that I schedule to align with my girlfriend’s.

All in all, my experience as a resident so far has been incredible. Most would say the learning curve is steep transitioning from 4th year to intern year, however the faculty and upper level residents here make it as seamless as possible. Their patience, willingness to teach, general friendliness, and vast knowledge guarantee that I learn new “tricks of the trade” every shift. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be thrilled to have you rotate with us and to find out why this residency program is seriously something special.
