Medical School: University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth - Texas COM
My name is Stormy, yes, just like the weather. I’m originally from Anchorage, Alaska and my family still resides there. I grew up playing hockey, football, rugby and really any sport I could get my hands on. I was skating and skiing before I was walking.
I went to medical school at TCOM in Fort Worth and did most of my third and fourth year rotations here at Christus Spohn. At the end of my third year, I did my audition rotation in the emergency department and realized it was why I went into medicine to begin with. It’s the best of all worlds. Teamwork, camaraderie, broad patient interactions, procedures, and making a difference in an acute setting. Being able to improve someone’s quality of life by having the knowledge and resources to solve problems is very gratifying to me.
During my time here what stood out to me was how much autonomy and experience the residents had. I remember coding someone in the street with one of the third-year emergency medicine residents and I was impressed with how they improvised and adapted to the circumstances. The procedural experience residents receive in this program is unparalleled. Training in an unopposed facility where the EM residents have priority for any procedure, prepares us to work in any ER in the country.
In addition to great training, the faculty are mentors. They are approachable, knowledgeable, and they care about us as people, not just as residents. The approach to residency at this program is about the whole person, not just about being a doctor. Let’s be honest though, when looking at a residency as a medical student you are looking at your colleagues. I’m blessed to have an amazing group of co-residents that have my back, teach me, and are there whenever you have a tough day or conversation. If this sounds like the kind of place you might be interested in, I hope you will check us out.
