Edward Via Virginia COM
I come from a small town in northeastern Ohio named Amsterdam. With a population of just under 500 people, I am sure you know exactly where it’s located. I grew up playing three sports, fishing, and riding four-wheelers. After high school, I completed my undergraduate studies at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio where I majored in chemistry. I attended medical school at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia (Go Hokies!) where I found my passion for emergency medicine.
Going through the interview process is stressful for everyone. When I received an interview with the Texas A&M-Christus Spohn Emergency Medicine Residency Program I was excited. I was intrigued by the possibility of training near the beach. During my interview, I realized that although the beach locale was appealing, I was most impressed that this was a program filled with people that made me feel at home. I knew immediately that this was the place I wanted to be for residency.
Our program has so many things to offer physicians beginning their emergency medicine careers. There are only two residency programs within our hospital system. This means we get to do an incredible number of procedures and we are the decision makers for all of the patients coming through the ED. Our autonomy to care for critically ill or injured patients in our hospitals is exceptional. And we practice medicine in an incredibly supportive environment, where each resident feels valued as a member of the team. The faculty, nurses, and staff are always there to help and genuinely want to see each and every resident succeed. Here in south Texas we are forging friendships with nurses, faculty, support staff and fellow residents that will last a lifetime.
I am certain that I have chosen the right place for me to start my career as an emergency physician.
