Medical School: University of Maryland
I was born in Massachusetts, but grew up in the great state of North Carolina, and somehow avoided developing a strong Southern accent. I began my undergraduate years at BYU in Utah. My education was interrupted by a 2-year mission for my church in the austere land of southern France. My travels took me to Toulouse, the French Alps, the Pyrenees, and the island paradise of Corsica. I have yet to use my French speaking skills in south Texas, but eagerly await the wayward French traveler who stumbles into the ED. I finished my undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland and married my wife who was in dental school there. I remained in Baltimore for medical school at the University of Maryland. We recently welcomed our first son and are enjoying being new parents.
We left the land of the Wire and our inner-city lifestyles to explore the great city of Corpus Christi. It's definitely a change of pace to live two blocks from the beach and have access to a pool that's open year-round. Corpus Christi is full of things to do like fishing, surfing, bird watching, and more. I've been to my first sea turtle release at the Padre Island National Seashore, savored real Texas BBQ, played basketball with friends, and enjoyed the affordable golfing at the local courses in town. I still have yet to buy some cowboy boots, strap an enormous kite to my body and surf along the waves like many of the locals. I debate whether or not to buy a Texas edition pick-up truck with four wheels in the back that is twice the size of my current ride, a Yaris.
The interaction among the residents is what really drew me to this program. It's a small, tight-knit group. We love to work hard and enjoy our time off as well. I like that we are the regional trauma center and are essentially unopposed. Family medicine is the only other residency program. For trauma activations, it's an EM resident on their trauma month that runs it. All airways and lines belong to us. When calling consults, we speak directly with the attending specialist, often someone with decades of experience in their specialty. Our attendings are smart, fun, and encouraging. They offer many helpful tips during each shift. It's a great place to train.
