Hi there, my name is Meggie Edwards and I’m originally from Houston, Texas. After completing medical school in Missouri, I was certain that it was time to come back to God’s country. I vacationed in Corpus Christi as a kid, and I was elated to come here to train.  I think the most important part of a program is the people- these are your colleagues who you will spend an enormous amount of your time with, and it’s important that personalities and work ethic mesh well together.

One of the special characteristics of this program that it’s unopposed. There are no surgery residents or trauma fellows to compete with procedures, and the ACGME numbers are obtained almost effortly. It’s a team effort of emergency medicine residents (and sometimes family medicine residents) working together on a patient in the ICU, the ED, and while responding to floor codes.

The hands-on aspect is incredible, and I have had the opportunity to perform some procedures as a first year that many other programs reserve for more experienced residents. The acuity of Corpus Christi medical patients is also extremely high, and there is no shortage of medical resuscitations. This residency shapes you into a leader, as the ED is truly resident-run. The attending physicians have been excellent at helping mold my clinical decision making and have been wonderful examples in practicing medicine with integrity.

I did not have the luxury of rotating here as a medical student, but I was immediately welcomed in with open arms and felt right at home. On my interview dinner and day, I could tell the residents were happy, living family lives outside of work, and felt supported by their attendings and faculty. This program really invests a lot into not only the learning of its residents, but also their overall well-being. I’m truly fortunate to train with this amazing group of people, and I’ve found my “good fit” that they say is the most important part of evaluating programs. I hope you’ll come learn with us!
