A.T. Still University of Health Sciences Kirksville COM
Hello everyone, my name is Karl Boehm and I’m going to run this like a Q & A session and answer the 10 most common questions people ask me:
1. How old are you? This is usually asked in an incredulous tone after someone finds out I was a freshman at the University of Utah when the Olympics were in Salt Lake (2002) or that I have memories of listening to Paula Abdul and New Kids on the Block while riding the school bus. I’m 33, thanks for asking.
2. Where’s home? I grew up in Northern California and moved to Utah as a junior in high school. I lived in Missouri and Ohio for medical school.
3. Are you going to move back to Utah? Nope.
4. Did you do anything before med school? Yep, 2 year Mormon mission to the great state of Tennessee. Undergrad, grad school and for extra fun I took an additional year in the middle of med school to teach and do research.
5. How tall are you? 6’6” and the weather up here is just fine.
6. Did you play basketball? Nope, and please don’t tell me if you had my height you would be in the NBA.
7. You have 4 kids? Yes, my wife and I have 4 children and thanks to the advances in modern medicine, it’s highly likely that we are a family of 6 for good.
8. You talk a lot about cars, what do you drive? A motorized beer can made by Suzuki. The Porsche will come later, much later.
9. Where do you live in Corpus? On the island; I wanted to live as close to the coast as possible. It’s a 3-minute drive to the beach and a 23-minute traffic-free highway drive to the hospital. My floorboards are regularly covered with sand and it seems every time I vacuum the car we are back at the beach the next day.
10. Why did you choose CHRISTUS Spohn? Buckle up, this is gonna be a long one. Christmas break of my first year of medical school I took to the interwebs and searched EM residencies for several hours. I created a list of my top 20 programs where I wanted to train and at the top of my list was a fairly new, unopposed program in south Texas. The only thing I knew about the program was that it was by the beach and the pictures of the residency looked pretty amazing! Especially in the dead of winter in Missouri. After rotating here as a fourth year I got a taste of just how amazing this place is. The residents are awesome, the procedures are plenty and the attendings are fantastic. This program truly feels like a big family, we get together often and everyone is always welcome, whether you are flying solo or bringing the brood like me, we always have a good time. Work hard, play hard, that’s what we do in Corpus.
