Medical School: Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences
I grew up in the center of the US, geographically speaking, in a small farm town in central Iowa; surrounded by corn, cows and more corn. It is the quintessential quiet, everyone knows your name town; but is where I developed the determined and driven nature that has now lead me to emergency room medicine.
I was a three-sport athlete in high school and continued to play baseball in college, while also spending summers in the sweltering Iowa heat working on farms and pouring concrete. I must admit Iowa summers have nothing on Corpus Christi, but the beaches more than make up for it. After college I worked at a hospital near my hometown in the ICU as a registered nurse for four years, and I fell in the love with pace and intensity of that environment.
Although I immensely enjoyed my nursing experience. I craved the knowledge and procedural acumen of my physician colleagues. Luckily, the hospital I was working in had a university affiliation that allowed me to work nights and go to class during the day. I then attended medical school in Kansas City and continued my focus on emergency room medicine.
Practicing emergency medicine is a great opportunity to encounter vast pathologies and be on the front lines of intervention and treatment. Corpus Christi grants me access to what I believe is one of the highest acuity emergency departments available. I am ecstatic with my pathologic and procedural exposure thus far, which is due in large part to our program not having to compete with residents from surgery, orthopedics or other specialties. The faculty are excellent teachers, and even better people to hang out with outside the hospital. Christus Health - Texas A&M EM has been a great fit for me and I hope that you will find it to be as well!
