Medical School: Marshall University
Undergraduate: Ohio University
I grew up in Richmond, Ohio whose population is as big as the number of people that come to our ED each day. There was not much going on in the town comprised mostly of farms and woods. In fact, if you look up the facebook page for Richmond, Ohio, the recommended sightseeing/popular attractions is Everhart Memorials. There were some great people there, though and I remain close to my high school friends. After high school I went to undergrad 3 hours away to Ohio University, not THE Ohio State University, but the smaller school that had more fun. If you don't believe me just google "Ohio University Halloween Party". I went to Marshall University in Huntington, WV for medical school. The school has several distinctions. It is known for the plane crash of 1970 and the subsequent movie We Are Marshall as well as recent Netflix and Vice documentaries describing the town's rampant drug epidemic.
What led me to residency in Corpus Christi, Texas? I was very interested in the idea of an unopposed residency. It does provide the opportunity to be involved in every medical case, in every trauma, and ample opportunities to become comfortable with procedures quickly without having to fight with other specialty residents for experience. Second, the residents and faculty are all very happy. That was apparent even on my interview day. The ED here is hopping, extremely busy with incredible acuity, yet the general atmosphere on shift is upbeat and lighthearted. In fact, everyone works hard but still finds time to joke and be positive. The friendly and supportive environment at our program is a strong lure for medical students who hope to be a part of something special. I was ready to make a big move away from the comforts of home for residency....it never hurts to live 5 minutes from the beach.
I can't wait to meet you when you come and feel free to ask any question that will help you decide if this is the right place for you too!
