I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma most of you have never heard of called Yukon, not to be confused with The Yukon Territory in Alaska or the GMC Yukon SUV. Trust me, I have to explain or everyone thinks I’m from Alaska. My wife and I met back in high school and got married the summer before I started medical school at OSU. We have one dog, a Border Collie named Kali who I think is the coolest dog ever. She likes to fish almost as much as I do. Speaking of fishing, I go every chance I get and seeing that I live on the coast, that means almost every week. I also like to hunt, camp, hike, pretty much anything outdoors, and did I mention fish?

Now on to what everyone reading this really cares about, why I chose this program. I didn’t get the opportunity to rotate here but I knew immediately after my interview day this is where I belonged. I knew pretty early on in med school that Emergency Medicine is what I wanted to do with my life so I did a lot of electives/auditions across the country in various EDs. Everywhere I went was great, however they were all missing that X Factor, or the one thing that stands out from the rest. I believe this program has that X factor. Words cannot describe how absolutely phenomenal the people are down here. From the upper level residents to the attendings and all our support staff, I can’t imagine a better group in individuals. It is truly something you need to experience in person to understand.

Having been here for a few months and working in the ED alongside the staff, I don’t regret my decision one bit and couldn’t imagine training anywhere else. The best part about this program is the autonomy and endless supply of extremely sick patients. I’ve worked in the ED for two months now and have already logged half of my required intubations, central lines and chest tubes to graduate. I’ve also performed a cricothyrotomy and pericardiocentesis in the ED. Being one of only two residency programs here grants us this ample supply of procedures and the faculty give us the autonomy to manage these extremely sick patients from day one… that is, if you’re up for it.

If you’re looking for a fun group of people to work and train alongside while taking care of the sickest people in south Texas, look no further. Come rotate with us and you will see how special this program is. If you have any questions get a hold of us and I’ll gladly help out in any way I can. Did I mention the fishing is phenomenal?
